Testimonial

Anthony just wanted to thank you again for teaching me so much over the past 2 years. I’ve loved every minute of it. You really helped me with my confidence too. I’m now signing every Sunday to the songs with the singers at the front of the church. Something I’ve always wanted to do, wanted to make my church more deaf aware and also show everyone how beautiful BSL is.

When my first daughter was born, I took her to a Sing and Sign Class where we learned some BSL signs; mostly to do with eating and drinking, changing nappies and of course animals.

I signed with my next three children too and it always amazed me how they could tell me some pretty important stuff before they could speak.

Fast forward a few years and I found myself at an event with two deaf ladies. No interpreter was provided for them and it was apparent they weren’t being considered properly when one of the games involved Chinese whispers.

I tried my best to relay the information to them but I knew if I just had a better grasp of BSL then it would have been so much better and we could have communicated properly.

When a friend told me about Anthony’s classes I jumped at the opportunity. I’m hoping to go on to Level 4 and maybe even further. It has been a revelation learning BSL and I’m looking forward to continuing the classes.

‘My language journey kicked off with a childhood fascination for Spanish, glued to the Tv watching Dora the Explorer. Which then led to me pursing a career in Spanish and French and recently graduating from Queen’s University. But life had a surprise in store for me during a job application at Anthony's summer camp – that's where I stumbled upon the world of sign language and as a result became immersed in the Deaf community. From that point sign language has opened so many doors and became such a meaningful part of my life. I am been so lucky to met incredible people from all over the UK and Europe. I have recently starting volunteering with a charity called Deaf Rainbow. Having the opportunity to connect with incredible people and attend different cultural events. Also I attended an international sign language conference at Herriot Watt University, with presentations from Deaf Academics all over the world and network and meet Deaf people from all walks of life. Now, I am currently studying a PGCE, I have the privilege to attend a placement at a Deaf primary school in Bristol. Words cannot express how grateful I am for all of these experiences sign language has brought me. However , beyond the conferences, events, volunteering, career aspects, the true reward of learning sign language has been the life long friendships and family I have had the pleasure of meeting along the way. Which has added so much value to my life and I am excited to see where the next chapter will take me.”
