Today one in five people are either deaf or have some loss of hearing. Older people are struggling to communicate which impacts on their mental wellbeing. With an increasing number of deaf people now using social services, Sign Source is working hard to ensure care homes and social services are able to learn about basic Deaf Awareness and sign language.
The teaching is fun and interactive and includes secular songs and poems and religious songs and prayers. Whether a setting has a deaf participant or not, knowing Sign Language and having basic Deaf Awareness is an excellent skill to have.
The knowledge gained by learning BSL is a step towards making the setting and general society more inclusive. Never underestimate the importance of interacting with a little bit of chit chat to someone who can’t hear. Regular social interactions are so important for mental wellbeing.
We are delighted to deliver teaching in basic Sign Language and Deaf Awareness and also some specific signs that relate to health and social care. This helps with accessibility for deaf people which essential for their leisure time and mental wellbeing as well as benefitting care homes.
